Some Good News and Some Bad Flus

Here's the story:

You know me; I like to bake cakes, duh. The one random thing keeping me from baking more often is the fact that you can only eat so much cake! So, the fact that my friend Carlos opened up a bakery last week presented an amazing opportunity. I bake a few cakes a week, and he sells them in his bakery!! Guess how many cakes I baked this weekend. Ready for this? 4! (Technically 8, if you count the number of pans I put in the oven.) Guess how many made it to the bakery? Yep. Just 1 :(

And here's where the bad news comes in: I got the flu this weekend! Not wanting to contaminate the customers, I ended up having to throw away some of the cakes. BUT! The chocolate bundt cake made it to the bakery unscathed and uninfected because it was made by Erica and I didn't touch it :)

Speaking of infected cake, I believe Chis's got infected too. BUT! Since he and I both got sick, I'm not too worried about the two of us eating it ourselves. The only problem is...it's freaking HUGE!!

Anyhoo, hooray for the bakery!! :) I'll keep posting pictures of the stuff I send over. Let's hope for some commissions sometime soon!! ;D

Seth's Birthday Cake

Here's the cake from the other night! It's based on the video games he has made for Xbox and computer.

WARNING! The logo he uses is a blood splatter, so the weak of heart should proceed with caution! ;)

The cake is a little lumpy because it fell apart on its way out of the pan! Also, it's definitely NOT the best piping I've ever done in my life, but once you pipe onto fondant (esp. WHITE fondant), there's no going back! Had I any extra time, I would have practiced a bit. BUT, he loved it, so I'm happy :)

Fondant

I made a cake last night, but I can't post it yet. It's for a friend's birthday and I don't want him to accidentally see it!

I did, however, want to post that I figured out how to make the buttercream fondant (same stuff I used for the corset cake) not appear greasy on the cake: after you roll it out and smooth it out on the cake, just take some powdered sugar and brush it over the surface with your fingers. Voila!! No shine :) And it doesn't mess up the color as far as I can tell. Cool beans, eh?

Still, even though I figured out how to get rid of the shine, I don't like this recipe as much as I like the one I used for the bachelorette party cake (the one with zebra stripes and such) because it was harder to work with. Though it was easier to knead, it cracks easily and just falls apart if you're not careful.

Anyhoo, I will post pics soon. It's not my best by far, but it turned out ok :)

Bachelorette Party Cake!

Here's the latest cake creation! I made it for my friend Nicole's bachelorette party (the same person for whom I made the corset cake). Check it out!

Sorry about the picture quality. I took the pictures with my phone at the restaurant. I'm actually blogging this from my phone too. Isn't that crazy?? Anyhoo, this time I used a different fondant recipe, and it was AMAZING! Not shiny or greasy at all, and it was incredibly smooth. I still don't get why people think fondant tastes bad, because every fondant I've used or eaten tastes great. It's just condensed, doughy frosting! Yum :) Here's the recipe! Enjoy!

Latest 2 Projects

I crocheted a couple of Christmas presents in 2010. I did a couple of coffee cozies for my mother-in-law and a Cthulhu hat for my hubby! Both Patterns came from Ravelry. Here are some pics!

Now I'm working on knitting a scarf! I've never knitted anything before, so this should be an adventure! I'll post pics when it's done :) Wish me luck!!
